Crystal's combination of regulatory research, compliance experience, technical background, and affinity for problem solving have afforded her the opportunity to lead global sanctions compliance programs for some of the world's most recognizable financial institutions and social media platforms. Today, Crystal leads the global sanctions compliance program for one of the world's largest crypto currency exchange firms, where she continues to develop innovative sanctions controls as she dives deeply into the technical inner workings of blockchain technology, its various layers, and their potential for sanctions risks.
Crystal has earned various certifications, and holds a B.A. in Psychology and a M.S. in MIS, specializing in statistics, data engineering, and data-driven intelligence. She was most recently recognized by Innovative Finance's list of Top 10 Policy Makers & Regulatory Experts within their Women in Fintech Power List 2023.
While not immersed in research, Crystal is steadily adding new chapters to her book, "Screen This -Avoid That,” the handbook for operationalizing sanctions programs from scratch. She also enjoys spending time in her garden, date nights with her longtime hubby, and having fun with the kids.
Sophie Bowler
Chief Compliance Officer and MLRO, Zodia Custody
Sophie is the Chief Compliance Officer and MLRO at Zodia Custody – an institutional Digital Asset Custodian owned by Standard Chartered, in association with SBI Holdings, National Australia Bank, and Northern Trust. She is at the forefront of Zodia’s unwavering commitment to delivering compliant and robust custody services to clients, overseeing the end-to-end compliance control framework.
With a background rooted in Anti-Financial Crime and Regulation, Sophie led EY's Financial Crime Consulting practice for the Digital Asset sector before joining Zodia. In this role, she advised and supported digital asset firms on their regulatory and compliance obligations, including the development of financial crime controls such as AML/CTF, KYC, sanctions, and fraud. She also advised and supported a vast range of financial services firms in the development and assessment of their financial crime compliance controls, and support in addressing regulatory intervention.
Prior to consulting she held a Deputy MLRO position and worked in the European Parliament as a political advisor to a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) where she worked on a vast array of anti- organized crime legislation and initiatives, most notably the 4th Anti-Money Laundering Directive (4AMLD) and Transfer of Funds Regulation.
Tom Armstrong
Compliance Advisor at TRM Labs
Prior to joining TRM Labs, Tom served as the Head of Financial Crime Compliance Digital Assets at Goldman Sachs. In this capacity, he led the strategic efforts to build the bank’s first dedicated financial crime compliance team covering blockchain-based assets, and served in an advisory capacity across a number of business verticals including investment banking, private wealth, asset management, global markets and additional digital asset projects.
With a decade of experience working on anti-money laundering and related compliance issues at Goldman Sachs, he also led Transaction Surveillance teams, and served as Head of the Financial
Intelligence Unit and Forensics Group teams.
Isabella Chase
Senior Policy Advisor, EMEA, TRM Labs
Prior to joining TRM Labs, Ms. Chase led a research cluster on Financial Crime Futures at Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), which was tasked with assessing the role of technology in compliance, evolving AML and CFT policy frameworks and how inclusive financial integrity can be achieved.
Having dedicated her career thus far to researching innovative policy responses to financial crime, Ms. Chase brings with her to TRM an intricate understanding of the UK and EU regulatory frameworks around financial crime.
